A NOTE FROM FREDDIE

Friends,

On December 2, our community was hit by unspeakable tragedy. It is still hard to comprehend that terror struck so close to home.

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the 14 souls who lost their lives, the 22 who were injured, the survivors and their families, friends and co-workers. Too many families were torn apart and lives changed forever by a senseless act of violence.

As we continue to heal and rebuild, I am comforted in knowing that when our first responders were called to duty that day, they performed selflessly and heroically. The emergency response by agencies throughout the Inland Empire was seamless and coordinated and is a perfect example of how police, fire and emergency medical services should work together to protect our community.

I know that our region is strong and we will not let this one incident define us. We have come together as a community and must continue to do so to support one another. If I can be of assistance to anyone who has been affected by this tragedy, please do not hesitate to call my office at (909) 902-9606.

Together we will continue to be #SBStrong.

Best Wishes,

A Note from Freddie

Friends,

The holiday season is upon us once again.

From my family to yours, I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving full of friends, family, health and happiness.

As we prepare to enjoy our holiday, we should remember that there are many families in need this holiday season. I hope you will consider donating some of your time to one of the locations feeding the hungry this Thanksgiving.

And, as the biggest holiday shopping season approaches, I encourage you to shop local whenever you can. This year, Saturday, November 28th is known as "Small Business Saturday" as a way to show support for our many local small businesses.

One of the best investments we can make in our community is supporting local businesses. Local business owners are the backbone of California's economy.

A Note from Freddie

Friends,

October 11th marked the second anniversary of my swearing-in to the State Assembly. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve you these past two years. I am tremendously proud of what we have accomplished together and I look forward to the great things we will accomplish in the future.

This month I was pleased to have the opportunity to host several events to bring our community together, connect you with valuable resources and ensure that our state government is working to serve you.

I partnered with Assemblymember Chris Holden to celebrate the Inland Valley Humane Society’s 66th Anniversary and help shelter pets find loving homes. I also joined forces with the California State License Board to host a free Senior Scam Stopper event. Senior citizens are the most at risk for being targets of fraud and I was happy to host this event so seniors and their families could learn how to protect themselves.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the Pomona Community Health Center and I teamed up to host a Free Breast Cancer Informational Workshop to increase awareness about low- and no-cost options for breast cancer screenings.

Finally, because of my 30-year career as an Emergency Medical Technician, emergency preparedness is one of my top priorities. That is why I asked the American Red Cross to join me for an Earthquake Preparedness Workshop to help you learn important ways to protect your family and your property when an earthquake strikes.

I look forward to hosting more events like these in the future. Please keep an eye on my website for future events and check out the rest of this month’s newsletter to learn more about the work we have been doing in Sacramento and at home.

A NOTE FROM FREDDIE

Friends,

October 29th will mark one year since Pomona SWAT Officer Shaun Diamond was killed in the line of duty. I knew Shaun for many years through his work in Downtown Pomona. He was highly regarded by all who knew him and his loss is still deeply felt throughout our community.

In his memory, I have introduced ACR 104 to proclaim the portion of Interstate 10 that runs through Pomona as the Officer Shaun Diamond Memorial Highway. Shaun dedicated his life to helping others and proclaiming a highway in his honor will be a lasting commemoration of his service and sacrifice.

The resolution will need to be approved by both the State Assembly and State Senate, which I expect to happen early next year. Please check my website for updates.

In this month's newsletter you can read more about my current legislation and find out information on the upcoming events I will be holding, including a Senior Scam Stopper Event, Low-Cost Pet Adoption, and a Breast Cancer Informational Workshop in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

August 2015 District Report

Monday, August 31, 2015 - 00:00

A NOTE FROM FREDDIE

Friends,

We did it! We won local control of Ontario International Airport!

I was thrilled to be with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Ontario Councilmember Alan Wapner as the historic agreement to transfer control of Ontario International Airport back to the City of Ontario was announced.

This is a huge victory for Ontario and the Inland Empire. Returning the airport to local control means improving our regional economy, creating more local jobs, and encouraging more airlines to fly into Ontario.

Restoring local control has been my top priority. I am extremely grateful to Mayor Garcetti and Councilmember Wapner for working tirelessly to reach an agreement and to everyone involved who helped make it a reality. This truly was a team effort.

I am also grateful to Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez for his partnership on our AB 1455. I am thrilled that our legislation helped play a role in making this agreement possible and demonstrating the strong state-wide support for local control. Our bill never received a single “no” vote and passed the State Assembly 75-0.

The transfer of the airport will take a little over one year to complete and I look forward to being there when the keys are handed over!

Great things are in store for the Inland Empire!

District Update

July 2015 District Report

Monday, July 27, 2015 - 00:00

A NOTE FROM FREDDIE

Friends,
I am very happy to report that my first bill has been signed by Governor Brown! Assembly Bill 162 will help find solutions that can prevent deadly wrong-way driving accidents on our freeways.

I authored AB 162 after a suggestion was brought to me by a Chino resident who was concerned about finding ways to prevent wrong-way crashes. As I researched his proposal, I found that California has not looked at updating the safety measures on our freeway on and off ramps since 1989.

Assembly Bill 162 will require the California Department of Transportation to conduct an up-to-date study of wrong-way accidents that will also evaluate our current safety measures and investigate safety measures implemented and tested in other states. My sincere hope is that we can identify new or improved countermeasures that can help save lives.

While we cannot prevent every accident from happening, it is important that we are aware of what to look for as we are driving. According to the California Highway Patrol, most wrong-way driving collisions happen late at night, so be on the lookout when you are on the freeway. They also recommend that you avoid driving in the far left-hand lane as many wrong-way collisions happen in the fast lane. You can listen to my full public service announcement here.

For more information on AB 162, I encourage you to visit my website. You can read more about my legislation and catch up on what is happening in our community in this month's newsletter.

June 2015 District Report

Wednesday, June 3, 2015 - 00:00

A NOTE FROM FREDDIE

Friends,

My Community Coffee series kicked off with events in Chino, Ontario and Montclair. I appreciate those of you from our community who came out to discuss important issues in the community, such as public safety, creating jobs and regaining local control of the Ontario airport.

Hearing feedback from my friends and neighbors in the community is one of the most important parts of my job as your representative. If you have not had a chance to make it to any of my coffee events yet, there are still more opportunities. My next two Coffees will take place in Pomona on Thursday, June 11th and Saturday, June 13th.

If you would like more information, or would like to RSVP to any of these events, please visit my website.

Please take a moment to read this month’s newsletter (link to newsletter landing page) and catch-up on what I am working on in Sacramento and at home in the district.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

March 2015 District Report

Wednesday, March 25, 2015 - 00:00

A NOTE FROM FREDDIE

Friends,

The legislative session is moving ahead full speed in Sacramento. I am very happy to report that my first bill, AB 172, passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee last week! This is a very important measure that will close a dangerous loophole that puts the safety of emergency room care providers at risk.

I am thankful for the support of the Emergency Nurses Association and their members whose emotional stories of being physically and verbally assaulted while working in the ER showed exactly why this bill is necessary.

If you would like to learn more about AB 172 or any other bill I have authored this year, please visit my website.

In this month’s newsletter, you will find details of my 2nd Annual Community Coffee Series, important earthquake preparedness tips and updates on what I have been doing around our community to serve you.

A NOTE FROM FREDDIE

Friends,

February has been a busy month!

I have enjoyed seeing so many of you around the community and at my Covered California, Low Cost Auto Insurance and Cash for College events this month. Helping connect you with important resources is just one of the ways I am working to help you.

There is one more Cash for College opportunity if you have not been able to make it to one of my events. The final Cash for College event will happen this Friday, February 27th at the Ovitt Library in Ontario from 3-6 p.m. Completing the FAFSA can be complicated and we will have volunteers standing by to assist you.

To RSVP for this event, please call my District Office at (909) 902-9606.

In this month's newsletter you will read about the legislation I have introduced in Sacramento, find details on my first two Community Coffee events, and learn about a very important enrollment extension from Covered California.

A NOTE FROM FREDDIE

Friends,

I hope the new year is treating you well. We have a number of exciting community events coming up in February that I hope you will take advantage of, beginning with a Covered California Enrollment Event on February 7th. With the financial aid application season upon us, I will be holding three Cash for College Workshops to offer assistance with filling out the FAFSA and identifying other financial aid opportunities. And on February 14th I will be working with the California Insurance Commissioner to offer a Low Cost Auto Insurance Workshop to bring you information about Affordable Auto Insurance options. If you are interested in attending any of these events, please RSVP by visiting my website or calling my district office at (909) 902-9606.

The legislative session kicked off on January 5th with the inauguration of Governor Jerry Brown for a historic fourth term in office.  I am pleased that Governor Brown highlighted improving our local roads and highways as one of his top priorities for California. I look forward to working with the governor to bring much needed infrastructure improvements to our community.

I have hit the ground running in Sacramento and have introduced ten bills so far for this session. You can read more about the bills I have authored in the Legislative Update section of this month’s newsletter.

As we continue our work in Sacramento, I want your help guiding my legislative priorities for this year. Earlier this month, I sent out an online survey to residents in our district asking for your input on the most important issues facing our community. To those of you who have completed the survey, I thank you. Your feedback is invaluable. Your responses have helped support the argument for local control of the Ontario Airport which I wrote about in the Daily Bulletin last Wednesday.

If you have not had a chance to take the survey yet, you may do so by visiting my website.

As always, my door is always open to you. If you have an idea for legislation or if you need help with any state related issue, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to working together.

Best Wishes,
