Take the Day: Honor Veterans

Tue, Nov 3 2020

Donald Vodvarka

Did you know there are more veterans that call California home than any other state? Join me on November 11 to pay tribute to our nation’s veterans who have honorably served and sacrificed for our country.

This year it was a privilege to honor Donald Vodvarka from Montclair as the Veteran of the Year from the 52nd Assembly District. Donald served in the Navy from 1945 to 1958, during which time he received a presidential commendation from President Harry S. Truman.

Let us commemorate Veterans Day by honoring their service, sharing their stories for the future generations, and providing them with the quality services and benefits they have earned and deserve.

More information on Veterans resources are available at my website.

Remember Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery & Check Smoke Alarm

Tue, Nov 3 2020

Fall Back Time ChangeIt's time to "fall back" and turn our clocks one hour back to Pacific Standard Time at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 6.

Also, this is a good time to ensure your smoke alarms are working and the batteries are up-to-date; and then check on the ones in the home of a parent, grandparent, or older neighbor. The conditions in California of dry wind and drought means we have seen more than our share of home fires and wildfires.

Lastly, confirm the age of the alarm too. The sensing technology wears out after ten years. An out of date alarm cannot safeguard your home and family against fires.

Officer Shaun Diamond Memorial Highway

Tue, Nov 3 2020

In loving memory of Shaun Diamond

Officer Shaun Diamond was a dedicated officer and a beloved member of the community who was taken from us far too soon. The sacrifice he made to protect and serve will never be forgotten.

On Saturday, October 29 we will commemorate the two-year anniversary of Officer Diamond's passing by officially dedicating a portion of the I-10 as the Officer Shaun Diamond Memorial Highway.

I hope you will join me, the Pomona Police Department and the Diamond family to honor Shaun and pay tribute to his service.

Participate in the Great Shakeout

Tue, Nov 3 2020

With over 37 million people living and working in California, a major earthquake could cause unprecedented devastation.

What we do now, before a big earthquake, will determine what our lives will be like afterwards. With earthquakes being an inevitable part of California’s future, we must act quickly to ensure that disasters do not become catastrophes.

Make sure you’re prepared by participating in the Great California Shakeout, a statewide earthquake drill held annually on the third Thursday of October. The 2016 drill will be at 10:20 a.m. on October 20.

The 2016 Shakeout drill will be the largest preparedness event in world history. It is organized by the Earthquake Country Alliance.

To participate, go to www.ShakeOut.org/california/register and pledge your family, school, business, or organization’s participation in the drill. Registered participants will receive information on how to plan their drill and create a dialogue about earthquake safety.

Small Business Spotlight: Impressions Gourmet Catering

Tue, Nov 3 2020

Ontario Small BusinessSmall businesses are at the heart of our economy in the Inland Empire. In celebration of Small Business Month in May, I will be highlighting some of the many small businesses that have enriched our communities.

This week, I want to acknowledge Impressions Gourmet Catering from Ontario.

In 1983 Sandra Forney established Impressions Catering. Their award-winning team of chefs provides full service catering to customers in the Inland Empire.

Recently, Sandra was awarded the Business Woman of the Year by National Association of Women Business Owners Inland Empire (NAWBO-IE). Recognized as someone who has taken creative initiative to grow her business, create jobs and help her community, she has received awards from Rotary, Soroptimist, Chaffey College, Ontario and Rancho Chambers of Commerce to name a few.

Sandra and her hard-working staff can be seen at many local events, often donating their services. If you see their team out and about, please help me thank her for all her hard work and dedicated service to our community.

If you are a small business owner, or interested in starting your own business, the Office of the Small Business Advocate within the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development provides information and assistance to small businesses so they can succeed in the California marketplace. San Bernardino Shooting: Lessons Learned

Tue, Nov 3 2020

The tragic events of December 2, 2015 are still fresh in our minds. After every major incident, it is important to review the emergency response to determine what went right, what can be done better and what we can apply statewide to better prepare for emergencies.

As Chair of the Joint Legislative Committee on Emergency Management, I will be holding a hearing on the December 2nd shooting. I invite you to join us.
