Dear Neighbors,

As we welcome spring, I’m proud to share some exciting updates from the State Capitol and across Assembly District 52. From introducing transformative legislation to help with disaster recovery to fighting for the Film & TV Tax Credits and celebrating Earth Day together, these past few months have been productive and Team Caloza is hitting the ground running. This May, we are also celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and want to uplift the rich contributions of AAPI communities to our state’s history, culture, and future.

A Productive Legislative Session

This year, I introduced 15 bills focused on wildfire recovery, supporting small businesses and nonprofits, protecting public health, expanding access to parks, and supporting working families across California. Here are a few bills I want to highlight:

  • AB 553: CalFresh - Expanding Food Access
AB 553 helps ensure CalFresh recipients, including women, families, and people living in deep poverty, can access hot and prepared meals that meet their needs. By removing red tape and modernizing program rules, this bill supports dignity, choice, and flexibility for millions of Californians who rely on CalFresh every day. Read the fact sheet here.

  • AB 616: California State Parks Pass Program for Libraries
AB 616 strengthens the popular State Parks Pass program that allows library cardholders to check out free day-use passes to California State Parks. This bill ensures the program remains accessible by allowing State Parks to provide these passes to libraries at no cost. Read the fact sheet here.

  • AB 1138: California Film & TV Tax Credits
I’m proud to co-author AB 1138, that strengthens California’s Film & TV Tax Credit. This legislation is about fighting for jobs and our workers, including many in AD 52, whose livelihoods depend on a healthy creative economy. It also supports small businesses, immigrant and women-owned vendors, and so many people who rely on a thriving film and TV industry to uplift our local communities.

Commemorating the 110th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

This April, we honored the memory of the 1.5 million Armenians who were systematically murdered during the Armenian Genocide. As a proud member of the California Armenian Legislative Caucus Foundation, I stood in strong support of HR 25, which commemorates the 110th anniversary of this tragic chapter in history. On the Assembly floor, I spoke about the importance of remembrance, recognition, and reaffirming our commitment to justice.

Standing in Solidarity with Vancouver’s Filipino Community

I am heartbroken by the tragic attack on the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver, which claimed 11 lives and injured dozens more. As a proud Filipino American and representative of Assembly District 52, I extend my deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and the global Filipino community. California stands with our Filipino Canadian family in solidarity. We must continue to foster peace, protect cultural spaces, and stand united against hate.

East Los Angeles Mobile Office Hours – Recap

We had a fantastic time at our first Mobile Office Hours in East Los Angeles! It was great to connect with community members, listen to concerns, and help folks access state resources. A special thank you to representatives from the Employment Development Center (EDD) for being on-site to help constituents with their unemployment claims directly. Team Caloza is grateful to everyone who stopped by, and we’re just getting started.

Echo Park Earth Fest – Celebrating Sustainability and Community

We were proud to co-host and participate in Echo Park Earth Fest 2.0 on April 26 at El Centro Del Pueblo Youth Center—a vibrant celebration of environmental awareness and community spirit. Our team set up a resource booth to connect residents with state services and share information about our environmental legislation. I was honored to speak alongside community leaders about the importance of investing in green spaces and uplifting local environmental efforts. From community cleanups and composting tips to live performances and youth art, the Echo Park Earth Fest was a powerful reminder that protecting our planet starts right here at home.

Supporting Local Small Businesses: El Sereno & Atwater Village

This spring, we hit the pavement in both El Sereno and Atwater Village to visit small businesses, hear directly from owners, and offer support from my office. In El Sereno, we walked the corridor with local leaders to discuss the community, their priorities, and available state resources. In Atwater Village, we partnered with Friends of Atwater Village to connect with longtime neighborhood staples and newer businesses alike, hearing their priorities around economic recovery, infrastructure, and community partnerships. These walks are a vital part of how we stay grounded in the day-to-day experiences of small business owners across the 52nd District.
