Statement on Senator Padilla’s Forcible Removal and Ongoing ICE Raids in Los Angeles
I am outraged that United States Senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from a press conference and handcuffed to the ground while exercising his duty to perform Congressional oversight of federal government operations. This is unacceptable. Thank you, Senator Padilla, for your continued courage and for standing up for all Californians.
From respected public servants to everyday working-class people, I denounce the acts of violence by ICE and the federal government. Tearing families apart and detaining individuals without due process or access to legal counsel is inhumane, cruel, and wrong.
I also denounce those taking advantage of this heartbreaking situation with looting and vandalism. This also does not represent California’s values. These actions harm our neighborhoods, undermine our calls for justice, and endanger the very people we seek to protect. We must remain united in peaceful protest.
Everyone has the right to feel safe in the place they call home, regardless of their immigration status.
To those who continue to show up and speak out for our fundamental rights and freedoms, I stand with you. Let us continue to demand change through solidarity, not violence.
