SACRAMENTO, CA –Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement on the United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which protected a woman’s right to an abortion.
“The rights of women are not explicit in the constitution, and a rogue conservative majority on the Supreme Court are using that basis to erode women’s reproductive rights. At this point in time, guns and the second amendment have more protections than a woman’s sole discretion to make her own health decisions” said Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo.
“Today’s ruling will have a disproportionate impact on low income and marginalized communities, whose lack of access to adequate healthcare services will remove their means to safely seek an abortion. Contrary to the misleading narratives of anti-choice extremists, restricting access to abortion will not decrease the frequency of abortions, but will only increase the frequency of death and complications arising from underground operations. This decision puts women in danger.”
In preparation for this decision and in partnership with the California Legislative Women’s Caucus and the California Future of Abortion Council, several pieces of legislation on reproductive justice are advancing. Assemblywoman Carrillo is authoring AB 2205, which will mandate that health insurers provide transparency on how much of their allocated funds are specifically designated for abortion services via the California Health Benefits Exchange.
The @CaWomensCaucus is leading efforts to ensure access to #ReproductiveFreedom & abortion services to all in need across the nation.

This week, Assemblywoman Carrillo co-authored Senate Constitutional Amendment (SCA) 10, which explicitly protects abortion in California by constitutional amendment; shielding our state from the national assault on women’s reproductive rights.
Lastly, Assemblywoman Carrillo believes that the California budget is a reflection of our values. Through the budget process, the legislature is moving a $205 million investment related to abortion access and reproductive justice. The legislature will be sending this budget to the Governor for signature.
This is what a #ReproductiveRights budget looks like. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn #RoeVWade won’t stop CA from being a safe haven for all seeking an abortion and care.
