Racism will never be tolerated in Los Angeles

Dear Friends,

I write to you with a heavy heart, saddened, and deeply upset by the disturbing statements made by three Los Angeles City Councilmembers. Like many Angelenos, I feel betrayed.

The comments made about a child were distressing, and the racist comments are completely unacceptable. Over the course of a leaked conversation, we heard elected leaders make demeaning and racist remarks about Black, Indigenous, Jewish, Armenian, and LGBTQ+ communities, and it cannot go unaddressed. There is no place for bigotry and racism in our government.

I have called for the resignation of all three Councilmembers, Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León. I am encouraged to note that Mrs. Martinez has officially resigned not only as President but from the Los Angeles City Council.

The last few days have been painful, but I have faith that together, we will heal. To that end, I have joined the efforts of Congresswoman Karen Bass, who recently convened a meeting with faith, justice and civic leaders to help guide our efforts and next steps towards unity.

Los Angeles is a world city because of its people, all of whom, are worthy of respect and dignity.

In service,
