A state budget that reflects our values
June 2021
Dear Neighbors and Friends,
Happy Pride Month, Immigrant Heritage Month, and California reopening!
One year ago, our schools, homelessness programs, and even healthcare funding were threatened with cuts as California faced a budget shortfall amid COVID-19. Thanks to good investments, strong tax revenues, and a boost in federal funds, we went from deficit to surplus.
I championed putting California’s one-time surplus to work, and I have been proud to craft a state budget that reflects our values shoulder-to-shoulder with Speaker Rendon, Budget Chair Ting, Senate leadership, and Governor Newsom.
As Chair of Budget Subcommittee 4 on State Administration, we worked round the clock to create a budget that leads with equity, and like a rising tide, will lift up all of the members of our communities, ensuring additional buoyancy to those who have struggled to stay afloat.
Last week, the legislature passed an on-time and balanced state budget for the coming fiscal year. Shortly, the budget State Assembly and Senate sent to the Governor’s desk will be compared to his May Revise, and a final 2021-2022 California State Budget will be adopted and signed into law which:
- Delivers Economic Stimulus & Relief for Workers, Families, Children, Seniors, Small Businesses, Startups, Nonprofits & Cultural Institutions
- Improves the Employment Development Department (EDD)
- Focuses on Climate Change & Resiliency
- Expands Child Care & School Readiness/Early Childhood Education
- Increases Funding for Schools, Special Education & After-School/Summer Enrichment
- Champions Career & College Readiness
- Safeguards Public & Mental Health Equity
- Advances Health Equity for Seniors & the Disabled
- Fights Poverty & Hunger Regardless of Immigration Status
- Prioritizes Housing, Support for the Unhoused & Homelessness Prevention
- Ensures Criminal Justice Reform & Access to Justice
- Invests in Broadband, Childcare, Transportation & Residential Infrastructure
I’ve worked to guarantee that our final 2021-22 California State Budget will be both historic and transformational. It will be one that looks to the past, to the present, and focuses on the future. It will lift up the goals and dreams you have for your family, and the goals and dreams we share.
We deserve a state budget that reflects our values – a state budget of a California For All, not a California for some.
