A Time to Be Grateful

Assemblywoman Carrillo

Dear Neighbor,

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends, share stories and laughter, and create memories that will last a lifetime. This Thanksgiving, I am grateful for God’s many blessings, my family's health and well-being, our community’s prosperity, and the incredible privilege of being in service.

We know that across our community, many families suffer in silence from hunger insecurity, not just during the Holidays but every day.

This year marked significant progress in tackling hunger and food insecurity in our communities. Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 712, a bill I authored, which aims to assist families facing food insecurity by mandating that California apply for a federal waiver allowing CalFresh beneficiaries to use their benefits for hot and prepared meals. The Legislature and Governor also remained committed to funding anti-hunger programs in this year’s budget, including but not limited to:

  • $15 million for the CalFresh Minimum Nutrition Benefit Pilot Program to increase the minimum monthly CalFresh benefit for eligible households from $23 to $50.
  • $47 million for the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) Program for children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals beginning summer of 2024 and continuing in summer of 2025.

In the Assembly, my office works hard to bring these resources home and help our communities thrive. I am proud to share that, this month, my office partnered with California Water Service, Via Care LA, the East LA Chamber of Commerce, Centro del Pueblo, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Centro Maravilla Service Center to provide nearly 500 turkeys to people in our community!

I am profoundly grateful for the trust you place in me. It is an honor to serve you and to be a part of this extraordinary community. May this Thanksgiving bring you closer to your friends and loved ones.
