Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo Responds to Los Angeles School Shooting in District 51

For immediate release:

“My office is aware of the shooting that took place at Sal Castro Middle School this morning in the 51st Assembly District,” said Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles). “This is the last thing any parent thinks of as they see their kids off to school each day and I’m sure I echo the gratitude of many parents for the fast actions of teachers and administrators involved who put the safety of students first as law enforcement arrived to the school.”

According to media reports, at 8:55 a.m., two students were shot and at least three others were wounded during a shooting at Sal Castro Middle School in Westlake on the 1500 block of W. 2nd Street. Among the victims were a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl. The boy was shot in the head and was in critical but stable condition, while the girl was shot in the wrist.

Carrillo continued, “We will be working diligently with the Los Angeles Police and Fire Departments and Los Angeles Unified School District to ensure families and students have the resources they need as we see the impacts of this incident.”
