Assemblymember Carrillo’s Statement on 2018-19 Budget

For immediate release:

Local highlights include funding for LA State Historic Park, Exide parkway cleanup, and legal services for TPS recipients and unaccompanied immigrant minors

SACRAMENTO-Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement regarding the Assembly’s passage of the 2018-19 State Budget:

“Showing a balanced restraint to protect California, this budget makes important investments to address homelessness, create jobs, help small businesses and prioritize our children, including fully funding the Local Control Funding Formula for K-12 education as well as a significant investment in higher education. In thinking of the future of California, this budget will continue to expand our Rainy Day Fund.

“For the people of the 51st Assembly District and those across the state, I have secured funding to help provide safe bicycle and pedestrian access for the Los Angeles State Historic Park, Exide parkway cleanup and legal services to assist unaccompanied minors and individuals who face their temporary protective status (TPS) being revoked. I commend all the passionate stakeholders, as well as my colleagues and the Governor involved in moving these requests forward and securing their approval.”

Assemblymember Carrillo successfully advocated for the inclusion of these three much-needed proposals in the State Budget:

  • Los Angles State Historic Park will receive $500,000 to develop a plan to provide safe access to this park which is currently obstructed by numerous barriers.
  • The 51st District, along with other areas significantly impacted by contamination from the Exide battery recycling plant, will receive an additional $6.5 million for the testing and removal of lead contaminants in parkways, which are the grass and soil areas on sidewalks in front of residential homes. This appropriation will also enable additional coordination between the state Department of Toxics Substances Control and the County of Los Angeles as they work towards maximum clean up goals.
  • In response to the federal administration targeting of TPS recipients and unaccompanied minors, the Department of Social Services will receive a one-time $10 million funding boost to aid with legal services for this vulnerable population.
