LOS ANGELES, CA — In her first year in office, California Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles) hit the ground running. Assemblywoman Carrillo had seven of her bills signed into law, honored distinguished community members on the legislative floor, hosted numerous events in the district and represented the state of California on delegations to El Salvador, China and by the end of November, Chile. She also aided in the passage of several significant pieces of legislation involving women’s health, renewable energy and bail reform, among many others. Most of all, 2018 was a year of listening and learning, building a foundation of greater equity, justice and opportunity for the people of the 51st Assembly District and all of California.
LEGISLATION
Seven of Assemblywoman Carrillo’s bills were signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown in September, addressing parks access, job creation and greater workforce protections against discrimination and harassment, clean air, water efficiency and higher education access. Here is an overview of Assemblywoman Carrillo’s legislative accomplishments:
- (Assembly Bills) 2615 and 2745 bolster outdoor experiences, emphasizing safe and enhanced parks access.
- ABs 2358 and 2762 create jobs, offers improved worker protections and contributes to California’s burgeoning economy.
- AB 2381 protects our communities from pollution and secures needed resources to detect defeat devices designed to skirt California clean air laws.
- AB 3101 simplifies the online application for community college to expand accessibility and opportunity for all applicants.
- AB 2371 optimizes landscape water use in California, improving landscape designs, irrigation systems, and urban water use practices in order to protect our water supply.
In addition to her diverse and impressive bill package, Assemblywoman Carrillo supported key legislation addressing net neutrality, small businesses, reproductive health and restorative justice. Assemblywoman Carrillo was also a proud co-author of Sen. Kevin de León’s SB 100, which requires California to obtain 100 percent of its power from renewable energy sources by 2045.
Assemblywoman Carrillo also brought dollars back for the improvement of the 51st Assembly District as part of the 2018–19 State Budget that passed earlier this year. For the people of the 51st District and California, Assemblywoman Carrillo secured:
- $10 million for legal services for federal Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients and unaccompanied immigrant minors.
- $6.5 million for Exide lead contamination parkway (grass or soil strips near sidewalks) testing and cleanup.
- $500,000 for safer access to Los Angeles State Historic Park.
- Significant investments in educational equity and homelessness prevention efforts.

Throughout 2018, Assemblywoman Carrillo welcomed notable 51st Assembly District community members to Sacramento and honored them on the Legislative Floor for their outstanding service to the community. The 51st Assembly District is a tapestry of dedicated and selfless leaders who have touched the lives of many.

COMMUNITY EVENTS
In the district, Assemblywoman Carrillo has taken a listening tour across the neighborhoods she represents. The six community coffees presented an excellent opportunity for neighbors to ask about legislative issues and discuss how to partner in improving the 51st Assembly District and the lives of our residents. Assemblywoman Carrillo has hosted coffees in Eagle Rock, Cypress Park, Highland Park, El Sereno, East LA and Echo Park.
The office also hosted tree adoption events, distributing free trees to neighbors and adding to the urban canopy. Between the tree giveaways in Highland Park, Silver Lake and El Sereno, over 300 shade and fruit trees found new homes!
