SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D – Los Angeles) recognized the Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) as the 2022 Non-Profit of the Year for the 51st Assembly District. Co-sponsored by the Assembly Select Committee on the Nonprofit Sector and the California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits), this award brings attention to one outstanding non-profit organization in the 51st Assembly District, highlighting the positive impact of their efforts.
“The PWC’s exceptional work in our district distinguishes the organization as an agent of worker’s rights and a vehicle for change,” said Assemblymember Carrillo. “Immigrant workers are integral to the American economy, and our district values the essential role they play in ensuring the continuing prosperity of our state. I am proud to honor the Pilipino Workers Center for its persistence in championing the cause of immigrant laborers – a valued and cherished part of our community.”
“PWC is honored to be recognized and grateful to be a space where immigrant workers and the community can bring their collective wisdom, efforts and power to build an equitable society and uplift the rights of everyone to live and work with dignity and respect,” said Aquilina Soriano Versoza, Executive Director of the Pilipino Workers Center.
Today, PWC functions as a significant player in immigrant worker organizing on the local, state, and national level. Their involvement also spans support efforts benefitting immigrant entrepreneurship, healthcare advocacy, civic engagement of the API community in Southern California, and strategic policy education.
PWC’s involvement in providing direct aid to workers during the Covid-19 pandemic saw the distribution of over $3.3 million cash aid and other pandemic response programs, going on to benefit more than 12,000 frontline immigrant workers and their families. The aid included $2.3 million in services funded by the Los Angeles Department of Public Health and the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency.
The California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits) hosted California Nonprofits Day, at the State Capitol, in honor of nonprofits across the State.
Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo was elected as the representative of the 51st Assembly District in December of 2017. She is currently the Chair of Budget Subcommittee No. 4 on State Administration, and a member of the Assembly Committees on Appropriations; Budget; Health; Housing and Community Development; and Utilities and Energy. Carrillo represents the people of East Los Angeles, Northeast Los Angeles, and the neighborhoods of El Sereno, Echo Park, Lincoln Heights, Chinatown and parts of Silver Lake.
